It is with great regret we feel again compelled to request your intercession with the Canton Authorities in our con- -troversy over supplies of limestone for this Company. Matters have gone from bad to worse and there seems to exist a complete embargo on all shipments from Chinese Territory.
We have carefully investigated the many reasons put forward by the officials for their action and it is abundantly convincing that they are merely subterfuges and the single motive is to drive this Company out of existence or compel it to purchase at an exagerated value the Kuang Tung Government's own Cement Factory on Honem.
We have placed the history of the affair before
H. M. Consul-General in Canton who promises energetic action in our support and our object in laying the position again before you today is to beg you will supplement our efforts with all the support you can and we further desire that we fulfil our duty in keeping you fully informed of the progress of affairs.
The restrictions on limestone supplies have now reduced our stock to only about two or three weeks consumption, and if no more be received a stoppage of our works will be necessitated. This will involve a neavy loss to the Company in profits and probably consequential claims on unfulfilled contracts and will throw out of employment large numbers of employés.
We propose continuing work until the stone supply
is exhausted if such is to be the case, and then all other factors
